NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education) declared that the 1 Year BEd Course in India will commence from 2026 onwards in selected colleges. This change is introduced to speed up the process for the candidates who already have either a post-graduate or 4-year integrated degree (BA BEd, BScEd, or BElEd). Even if you have a three-year bachelor’s degree, even then, you will still have to pursue the regular 2-year BEd degree.

This article focuses on the one-year B.Ed. course in India, which is being reintroduced for eligible candidates. The programme is mainly for candidates who have prior teaching experience or are working as in-service teachers after postgraduate studies. The one-year B.Ed. programme offers a fast-track pathway to build a teacher.
The course aims to prepare teachers for secondary and senior secondary education through professional training in pedagogy, curriculum planning, classroom management, teaching methodologies, and educational practices. It is structured to help aspiring educators develop the practical and academic skills required for effective teaching in schools.

Why Do We Need a 1-year BEd Course in India?

Now, the question arises when we already have 2 existing types of BEd programs in India, then why would we need the 1-year BEd program? To answer this question of yours, this BEd program will be introduced for people who are already working and for the candidates who are actually facing valid problems.

    • The reintroduction of the one-year B.Ed. programme suggests that eligible candidates may now be able to complete the professional teaching qualification in a shorter duration compared to the existing two-year course. Since the course duration is reduced, there is also a possibility that the overall course fee may become comparatively lower, although the official fee structure has not yet been announced.
    • The programme will benefit working professionals who wish to transition into the teaching profession, as well as in-service teachers looking to upgrade their qualifications and teaching skills through a faster academic pathway.
    • The introduction of the one-year B.Ed. course may also help address the increasing demand for qualified teachers in India. Discussions continue regarding the importance of providing sufficient professional training and practical teaching experience to ensure quality teacher education and classroom readiness.
