The Chief Secretary of Ladakh, Ashish Kundra, chaired a high-level meeting on higher education to address faculty shortages, improve student enrolment and introduce specialised, skill-based and employment-oriented courses across the Union Territory.
The meeting reviewed the functioning of colleges and universities, teaching vacancies, student retention and Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) trends. Officials also discussed strengthening the recruitment process for the Common Teaching Cadre, including Assistant Professor positions.
The administration is exploring new courses in agriculture, horticulture, nursing, teacher education, hotel management, fashion technology and other professional fields aligned with local employment opportunities. Special attention will be given to remote areas such as Kargil, Zanskar, Nubra and Drass to improve access to quality higher education.
The Chief Secretary also emphasised career counselling, competitive examination coaching, entrepreneurship, industry exposure and practical learning. Institutions have been encouraged to develop research projects focused on Ladakh’s regional priorities and establish mechanisms to track graduates’ progression into employment and higher studies.
Why It Matters: The initiative aims to make higher education in Ladakh more accessible, skill-oriented and aligned with industry requirements, creating better opportunities for students to pursue professional education and careers within the region.
