What is the Full Form of B.Tech and BE Degree?
B.Tech stands for Bachelor of Technology, and B.E. stands for Bachelor of Engineering. Many students get confused between these two degrees because they seem similar, but they are different.
Both B.Tech and B.E. have their own importance. The main difference is that B.Tech focuses more on practical application, while B.E. emphasizes theoretical knowledge applied to practical problems.
To clear up any confusion, it’s important to note that both B.Tech and B.E. degrees are not available through distance learning. Students interested in these degrees should know that they need to enroll in a regular college to pursue their passion for engineering.
B.Tech and BE: Clarity in Terminology
Many people think that B.Tech and B.E. are the same because they can’t see any differences. However, there are variations between the two courses.
B.Tech stands for Bachelor of Technology. It is an undergraduate course for students interested in studying the technical aspects of engineering, especially hardware. This course focuses on the practical and technical aspects of science.
B.E. stands for Bachelor of Engineering. It is also an undergraduate course but focuses more on the theoretical aspects of engineering. This course emphasizes the theoretical knowledge applied to practical problems.
The names of B.Tech and B.E. degrees reflect their actual differences.
B.Tech and B.E. – Basic Facts
Course | B.Tech | B.E. |
Full-Form | Bachelor of Technology | Bachelor in Engineering |
About the course | It is a skill-based system and the course focuses on the main subjects of the divisions. | It is data orientated. The curriculum is based more on theory. B.E. students have to study subjects of other branches as well. This makes people think that B.E. has more scope since the student must have knowledge of other branches as well. |

B.Tech and BE: Eligibility Criteria
Both B.Tech and B.E. degrees have most of the things in common and the eligibility criteria are also the same to a great extent.
The standard eligibility criteria of BE and B.Tech are:-
- Candidates must have passed the examinations of intermediate level of education or 10 + 2 from Science Streams or with subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics as core subjects.
- Candidates also need to secure at least 50% marks and this minimum percentile criterion also depends on the university.
B.Tech and BE: Duration
Although B.Tech and B.E. cover different subjects, both degrees have the same duration of 4 years. Students can complete either B.Tech or B.E. in 4 years, and both courses follow a semester system, not a yearly one. This means students take exams at the end of each semester, with the entire curriculum divided into 8 semesters.
B.Tech and BE: Popular Specializations
There are plenty of opportunities available for B.Tech and BE students and we decided to list down some specializations which are actually popular amongst students and will help you in achieving great success:-
Computer Science | Biomedical Engineering |
Aeronautical Engineering | Petroleum Engineering |
Electrical Engineering | Robotics Engineering |
Biotechnology | Civil Engineering |
Can I do B.tech/BE from Distance Mode?
Distance B.Tech and distance B.E. are engineering courses offered in a distance learning mode, making education more accessible for students who wish to work and study simultaneously.
However, students should note that according to the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education, B.Tech is only available on campus. Distance B.Tech or distance B.E. are not valid yet. But there is a valid option called B.Tech for working professionals, which is an evening program.
Therefore, candidates who are working and want to pursue B.Tech can enroll in the B.Tech for working professionals program and attend classes in the evening.
